Medical Transcription School
Choosing the right medical transcription school for you and your development of a career in medical transcription will depend on a number of factors.
When assessing medical transcription schools you will need to check out the teaching credentials and curriculum vitae of the instructors and course manager and you need to check whether they are either a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT).
You can check out the validity of their qualifications with the administering bodies, the Association For Healthcare Documentation Integrity for the CMT or the American Health Information Management Association for the RHIT qualification.
Accredited Medical Transcription Schools Teaching Materials
You need to ensure that the schools you look at are genuinely accredited medical transcription schools and that the training and teaching materials are adequate for the course and meet with your skills objectives. It is important that dictation materials that you will be training with are genuine dictation materials from a healthcare professional and not a recording by an actor or someone else.(See also home based medical transcription and medical transcription software)
Also check that you get good and regular feedback from your instructors and that you are exposed to at least 30 hours of dictation practice.
Medical Transcription School Course Content
There are certain guidelines set down by the Association For Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) and they stipulate that the course should cover
- English language, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation and medical style
- Technology such as computer skills and familiarity and use of transcription equipment, internet use and word processing
- Medical knowledge which will include medical terminology, surgery, pharmacology, pathology, laboratory tests amongst others
- Medical transcription practice including real dictation at 3 different levels, namely beginner, intermediate and proficient
- Healthcare records including both the legal and medical aspects of health documents, professional practice and confidentiality
Many medical transcription schools will provide a job placement service either as part of your course or after graduation and a close relationship with the healthcare facilities and professionals in the area should be something you would hope to see if your ambition is to work outside the home as a medical transcriptionist.
Working from home as a medical transcriptionist is also a common activity as many people are happy to be their own boss and take work from local (and not so local if you are set up properly) healthcare facilities, doctors, physicians and dentists.
Hopefully you will find the right medical transcription school for you and your career will be put on a firm foundation from the start; sticking with accredited medical transcription schools in your quest for your education will ensure that you do get the best transcription training which will stand you in good stead in the future.
